AVO Training Institute Substation Technician Certification courses

MEDIUM-VOLTAGE CABLE
DIAGNOSTICS & TESTING CERTIFICATION

COURSE OVERVIEW:

This comprehensive hands-on preventative maintenance certification course is intended for engineers, electrical technicians, and supervisors that test, install, maintain, repair or troubleshoot 5-35 kV solid dielectric and paper insulated power cables. Students will perform and analyze results of insulation resistance tests (DAR & PI), type I withstand tests (DC, AC, & VLF). Also, diagnostic test such as Partial Discharge and Tan Delta will be performed.

Cable Diagnosis is predictive and is often performed as part of condition based maintenance strategies. This course focuses on data collection to provide information about the overall condition of the cable. Students will learn the indicators that cable performance is deteriorating, understanding the signs that cable is about to fail and when to perform maintenance.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

  • Identify medium voltage cable components and causes of failure
  • Utilize safe work practices for cable testing per OSHA and industry consensus standards
  • Interpret current industry cable testing standards and procedures
  • Perform and analyze results of Insulation Resistance Tests (DAR & PI)
  • Perform and analyze results of Type I Withstand Tests (DC, AC & VLF)
  • Perform and analyze results of Type II Diagnostic Field Tests (Tan Delta & PD)
  • Identify the benefits gained by establishing a Conditioned Based Cable Maintenance Program

REQUIREMENTS

This certification requires the completion of one cable course listed below. The certification will be valid for 3 years from the date of issue. Cable Testing & Diagnostics, Medium-Voltage course: 4.5 days, 3.2 CEUs.

AVO Training Institute Substation Technician Certification courses

MEDIUM-VOLTAGE CABLE TECHNICIAN CERTIFICATION

COURSE OVERVIEW:

Finding the location of a cable fault doesn't have to be like finding a needle in a haystack. There are many locating methods, coupled with new detection technologies, that make this task much easier and less time consuming. However, you should understand that there is no single method or combination of methods that is "best." Your selection of the appropriate method for the situation and your skill in employing that method are the keys to safely and efficiently locating cable faults without damaging the cable. Splices and terminations, which are always a vital part of any cable system, become more susceptible to failure at higher voltages. Whether splicing or terminating is accomplished by the use of hand-applied tapes, a filled or molded device, heat-shrinkable tubing, or a prefabricated device, care should be exercised during the application. Poor workmanship or improper choice of materials could jeopardize the reliability of the entire system. This certification program will qualify technicians to safely splice, terminate, install and test medium-voltage cables. What is certification? Certification means you have achieved certain performance criteria - knowledge, skills and abilities through training. Certifications prove your skills, and their value is the recognition of customers, coworkers and employers. This certification also meets the requirements of OSHA 29 CFR 1910.269(a)(2)(vii).

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

  • Medium-voltage cable types, components and design
  • Safe use of splicing tools
  • Proper cable preparation, installation and handling techniques
  • Testing, splicing and termination procedures
  • Perform splicing and terminating in lab using tape, shrink and molded technologies
  • Perform DC dielectric testing in lab
  • Medium-voltage cable design, construction and operation
  • Industry standards and procedures for testing
  • Causes of cable failures
  • Perform insulation resistance, dielectric strength tests in lab and evaluate results
  • Locate faults by time domain reflectometer, arc-reflection and "thumper" methods
  • Electrical hazards and safety procedures for working on/around metal-clad switchgear, substations, motor control centers and facility electrical systems
  • In-service care and use of required personal protective equipment
  • Energized and de-energized work procedures such as minimum approach distances and lockout/tagout requirements
  • Temporary and permanent grounding systems and specific equipment hazards
  • Overview of OSHA 29 CFR 1910.331-335, .269, .303, .137 and .147

REQUIREMENTS

This certification requires the completion of TWO cable courses, which may be completed in any order within an 18-month period. The certification will be valid for 3 years from the date of issue: Cable Splicing and Terminating, Medium-Voltage, 4.5 days, 3.2 CEUs and Cable Fault Location & Tracing, Medium-Voltage, 4.5 days, 3.2 CEUs.
